Re: Jonah and the Whale; Sink or Float?

We had a short week this due to Rosh Hashanah observances on Monday.  I enjoyed waving to those whom I spied in the audience of the morning Family service - it is one of my favorite perks of being a teacher and a member at Emanu El.

On Wednesday, we told the story of Jonah and the Whale, a simplified version for our two-year-old listeners.  Then we retold the story and had the class act it out!  It was fun being the ship in the storm, then swimming before the whale swallowed us up!  Our art project was using bubble wrap to print onto our whales.  This project is done one child at a time, so they had to wait for their turn (some opted to play with trucks or in the kitchen while waiting, others enjoyed watching their friends painting the bubble wrap, then rubbing the whale into the paint).  We also visited Ms. Janet with Arts Alive and we played outside!  Such gorgeous weather too!

On Friday, everyone colored their little Jonahs and then glued them into their whales to finish our Jonah and the Whale art project.  We enjoyed fresh strawberries (yum!) with our challah before going to our weekly Kabbalat Shabbat service in the Chapel.  In circle, we read Hands are Not for Hitting and talked about the fun things we can do with our hands.  We also played outside again!  another gorgeous day - perfect for outside play.  Then we conducted our "Will it Sink or Will it Float?" science experiment.  We used a large clear plastic container to drop different items in.  It was so easy to spy the sinkers through the clear plastic and water.  The floaters were far more numerous!  The kids loved dropping things into the water (or maybe they were simply enjoying the water-play?)

We have class only two days next week due to Yom Kippur observances on Wednesday.  On Monday, we will finish our Yom Kippur themed activities.  No School on Wednesday, September 26th.  Friday marks the beginning of our Sukkot fun -- we will start by building our Sukkah in our class!

Enjoy the rest of this short week-end.  Elena and I look forward to seeing everyone's smiling faces tomorrow.

truly,  Cathy
